Cold Day in January

Actually we have had a very mild winter so far. A dusting of snow and lots of days in the 5o's. However, on Thursday, Jan. 12th the high was 11. Since I was babysitting the Willis grandkids, I decided to take up some sugar cookies to decorate. I knew we definitely wouldn't be going outside to play!

On a footnote: As Allison was leaving, Colin went down to get his hat. I told him he was staying inside and he didn't need his hat. Boy did I crush his little heart and the crocodile tears came.
Mom to the rescue - "Do you want your hat, Colin?" "Yea," Colin says. "It's okay buddy. Come get your hat."
Hence the hat while decorating cookies :-)

The Ferrera's flew in on Sunday, Dec. 18th. They paid a visit to my mom on Monday. Tuesday, we all went to Ames for a family photo op and lunch at Hickory Park. Wednesday, Allison and kids came down to stay for a few days. Thursday we met Jessica and Gabe at the Mall and Jared came to join the festivities later in the day. Friday the girls went for their annual hair appt. with Megan and the boys finished up shopping. Friday evening we gave up our traditional spaghetti dinner and had our annual Tasty Tacos (easier clean up for Dave). With early baths everyone was ready to open presents. One of the gifts was a big hit (Black Tasty Taco tee). I have never seen Jared that excited... Santa came during the night with lots of gifts - everyone must have been exceptionally good in 2011. Saturday we headed for Indianola with Chili, baconed-wrapped smokkies, and strawberry salad. After spending the day with my mom and family, we came back to Carlisle for the 5:00 pm church service. Sunday, Dec. 25th everyone headed in different directions - our Christmas was officially over. After singing happy birthday to Jesus, the Willis family headed for Aplington, the Ferrera's flew back to Dallas, and we were left all alone - Dave wishing he had someone to hang out with!!!!
Thanks to all of you for making this Christmas a time full of fond memories to treasure - however, not so much the virus we all got to share with each other...

An Early Party with Miss M

We got to have our own small party to celebrate Makenna's 3rd birthday after our trip to the orchard. I wrapped each of Makenna's gifts in black and white dotted paper and put them in a white sack with black spots and a black/white ribbon (for a tail). I even wrapped the gift from the Ferreras in black and white paper. All of her gifts had something to do with a Holstein cow. Why do you ask - she is having a cow party on the 15th, so I got a little carried away.Allison made a cookie with a cow drawn on it and we went to Pizza Ranch for supper.

Center Grove Orchard

On Saturday, Oct. 8th we went to the Orchard in Cambridge, Iowa. What a fun place to take Makenna and Colin. There was a big pillow to jump on, a long slide to slide down, a corn pool to jump and bury yourself in, a train ride, tractors to drive, animals to pet, corn mazes, a hayride, pumpkins or apples to pick, etc. We had a gorgeous fall day to enjoy with the Willis family.\

Erin had a request for me the last time I visited: she wanted me to get Michael's name in wooden letters, paint them red, and add pictures from the boys' new bunk bed comforters. (I had done Jacob's name when he was born in yellow and added vehicles from his crib comforter.)

I had 7 letters this time so it took me a little longer to finish them. The red didn't cover as nicely as the yellow. The black outlining seemed to take forever. I even goofed up by putting on a couple of things before talking with Erin - oops. The igloo and compass can't be painted over - Sorry... I agree, fewer would have been better!

They are now completed - I must admit they turned out better than I first thought they would - but don't ask Dave how many times I redid some... (that's the perfectionist in me)

"If" Erin has another child, I hope she uses the initials next time -"I.F." - lol

Texas trip #3 - August 2011

After working 6 of the 11 days at the Iowa State Fair, I got on a plane by myself and flew to see the Ferrera's. Not one to enjoy flying, I must say the flight wasn't too bad... I stayed for a week and had a great time.
Did a little cooking, lots of dishes (especially Erin's glasses - hee, hee), played with my buddy, watched quite a few movies/cartoons on TV, helped babysit, went to the movie "Help" with Erin and Annie, listened to Jason's informative presentations for Academy, had some special time with Erin (shopping/lunches out), and sorted Michael's baby clothes. Sunday the 28th came way too soon, but Dave and I will be driving back down in a few weeks to welcome Michael into our family.

We had the pleasure of babysitting over the weekend. The temp. was close to 100 both days. Happy birthday USA!!!
The Willis family came down from Ames to help us celebrate the 4th. We started on the 3rd up at North park. Makenna and Colin had fun on the bouncy toys and we enjoyed some supper and home-made ice cream from the Methodist stand. The fourth found the grand kids watching a parade and Makenna perfecting her wave to get lots of candy. Next we attended a brunch and after naps cooled off at the Carlisle pool. Then one of Dave's workers, Michael, invited us out for a swim in his pool. We finished the day with root beer floats - a Sigmund family tradition and lighting some sparklers...

Makenna's Special Room

Since Makenna was a baby, we put the pack and play in our walk-in closet and called it her "special" room. Don't turn us in for abuse - it doesn't have a door and she loves it.

Recently she started to out grow the pack and play and I decided to bring down the crib mattress and put it by our bed. She wanted it in her "special" room - go figure...

I just bought a "my cot" from Walmart - it fits toddlers up to 4 feet or 75 pounds. I put a body pillow under the sheet to give it more cushion. Yes, it's in her "special" room. I found Allison's Sunshine Care Bear and put our new favorite book on the cot for her. She'll be here on the 3rd and we'll see how it goes!!!

Erin will have #3 grandson come October. They have chosen the name Michael Everett Ferrera - it has a nice ring to it. My Makenna can still keep her place at the helm and mother the boys to pieces.

Congratulations Erin, Jason and Jacob - so happy Kbob will have a buddy to pal around with and keep Eri Rae wondering what varmints they will bring into the house next... hopefully it won't be minnows!!

It was great having Erin and Jacob here for a week.
Allison had a joint birthday party for Colin and Jacob. Jacob turned 2 on May 2nd and Colin was 1 on May 12th.
We got in a shopping excursion and ate out at Spaghetti Works.
Allison also brought Makenna and Colin down to spend a couple of nights so the kids could get some playing time together.
I even got an unexpected day with Erin and Jacob when their flight was cancelled.
My only regret was not being able to give Erin more rest time - I was a tad bit under the weather and didn't have much energy to help her out...
Can't wait to see them again in August!!!

I took my mom out to eat yesterday to celebrate her 82nd birthday (April 27th). It was a nice outing capped off with turtle cheesecake - which she would have eaten first, given she doesn't usually do lunch and has a sweet tooth. I gave her a Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune dvd game to play on her computer. Her comment - "I will never get off the computer now..."

Why?

He can come up with a song no matter what he is doing...
Give him a proper name - he'll sing a song
Give him a word or a phrase - he'll come up with a song
One summer to pass the time with his fellow workers, he would sing a song and they would have to name it. Trying to teach 18-20 year olds 60's tunes is quite a feat (since they thought he was a tad bit wacky at first). But by summer's end, they were quite accomplished and having fun with it!!
He will hear a song and he'll name the movie it comes from (Allison can go head to head with him on this one)
Shower time is always a favorite - doesn't matter if the windows are open or shut you'll hear a song (Erin and probably the neighbors too will vouch for this)
One time sitting at one of the girl's track meets - it's cold and wet - we get serenaded with "Singing in the Rain" to pass time in-between events
Today while cleaning the Carlisle Aquatic pool I come up from behind him and hear "drip, drip, drip, little April showers..." (from the movie Bambi)
His songs bring me joy and for this, I feel blessed!!!

My Makenna loves the show "Super Why". I must admit it is quite educational and we try to watch it when she stays with us. One of the characters is Princess Presto (Princess P). She has the super power to spell words. She zaps letters with her wand to spell the words.

I happened to find a wand and tiara in a drawer and took it to Makenna today. She didn't waste any time going through the house pretending to be Princess P.

Of course Nana made a pest of herself trying to get Makenna to pose for a pic. Sorry Miss M - you were having so much fun.

Sunday Easter Dinner

We had our Easter dinner at my mom's on Palm Sunday. It made it easier for everyone to have a chance to be there. Was happy to see everyone. Jason Todd even made it!! The food was yummy: the ham was donated by the Willis' family - Mary brought her famous broccoli casserole and deviled (angel) eggs for Allison - Connie made a potato casserole and a bundt cake - Mom furnished the rolls, relish tray and brownies for Jared - Megan had a delicious macaroni salad - I delivered the basic baked beans but did try a new orange salad (wasn't a hit; oh well) Lots to chow down...

Before dinner Dave hid eggs for Makenna and Colin - we had practiced at our house, so they knew just exactly what to do. It was fun watching them try to find the eggs. The weather was sunny and upper 50's during the egg hunt. It turned rainy and chilly mid- day. Glad we had the egg hunt when we did... Looking forward to celebrating Easter this Sunday with the Hallelujah choir ~Jesus has risen, he has risen indeed~

Texas trip #2 - March 2011

On March 11th we made another trek down south. This time we took my mom and sister, Connie. Had a wonderful time and especially enjoyed staying in some beautiful cabins in Fredericksburg with Jason's family.

Jason and Erin are always gracious hosts. They plan soooooo many interesting things to do during our stays.

We want to say a "BIG" thank you for all you did for us during our visit.

Almost forgot the best part of the trip - learned that we our going to be grandparents once again come October. :-)

Grandkids' Bedroom

Allison has been after us to finish fixing up the room in the basement that was our nephew's room when he stayed with us over 16 years ago. Dave finally conceded and now has finished sheet rocking the brick walls. He also dropped more wire so Jared can come and put in a light switch and additional electrical outlets. We left the ceiling black, but have 3 walls to paint. (I asked Makenna what color she wanted her room to be and she said purple). After the walls are painted we will lay padding and carpet the floor. Probably will add some twin beds down the road too.
Allison wanted to be surprised with the finished room, so I won't spoil it by telling how we decided to paint the room, except that Makenna helped today paint "her" wall purple.

Blessings in February

We had a scare when we got back from Texas. Allison was having chest pain and ended up visiting the ER three times without a diagnosis. After consulting a heart doctor friend, Jared took Allison to her OB. An ultra sound showed a grapefruit-size cyst on her ovary. Thus emergency surgery was scheduled. During surgery the cyst was drained and removed, seeing more blood the surgeon decided to do some exploring. In his exploration he found that Allison had had an ectopic pregnancy and her fallopian tube had burst and tissue had attached to her colon.

Since Dave and I are retired, we were able to help out the last 3 weeks at a minute's notice. I went up most days to watch the kids and fix meals. Makenna and Colin also came here over the weekend so Allison and Jared could be together and rest.

Blessings in February:

Jared phoned a friend
Allison's surgeon was very thorough
she is recovering nicely from the surgery
her chest pain has gone away
she still has a possibility of more children
Dave and I were retired

One of the things I took advantage of, was taking the kids to story time at the library.

I am so thankful Allison is healing - I will miss being with them every day, but know it was time they were a family again!!

Austin - Visit #1

Dave and I ventured down to Austin this past week. It's a 15 hour drive -We started Sunday, Jan. 30th - after 12 hrs. we stopped south of Ft. Worth (Burleson) then finished the last 3 hrs. on Monday morning.
Oh, what fun we had entertaining Jacob and he entertaining us!! He loved his train table as you can see by the pics. Erin was again a very gracious hostess. Yummy meals and fun times. She even turned on the heat when it dipped below freezing.
That's right, it can freeze in Austin - it can snow too - we got 1 in. on Thursday evening. Jason pulled out some board games to pass the time on the cold days.
The weekend saw temps. back into the 60's. We visited the Capitol on Saturday - great design. On Sunday we ended our stay with a picnic at Basfort Park. Gotta go again to take in the trails...
Up and in the car by 7 a.m. - Dave got to driving and just wanted to be home - ended up driving all 15 hours Monday!
Bet you thought we'd sleep in on Tuesday - nope - we were still on Jacob time - Dave up at 6:30 and me up at 7. Maybe tomorrow we'll sleep in - oops forgot - gotta go see those two grand kids in Ames - been away too long from my Makenna and Coldog!!

Christmas 2010

Unto us a child was born - what a wondrous gift that was!!

I was blessed having my daughters and their families around during the Christmas season. My brother, Brian and his two kids, Emily and Zach were able to be back for a few days too. We had a nice gathering at my Mom's Christmas eve - plenty of food and laughter... Later I stayed home with Jacob and Colin while the others attended evening services to celebrate Christ's birth.

Being with family at this time of year warms my heart. A smile and a tear comes when I reflect back on how my dad so enjoyed Christmas. As the years go by, it won't be easy getting us all together, but the memories will last a life time...

Colin and Makenna spent the night without their parents on Sunday. Busy, busy, busy... Colin is now crawling, sitting, and climbing up on things. Makenna loved blowing bubbles, painting with water colors, dancing, and throwing the ball over and over at the bat Colin was holding/chewing. I was a little nervous with Makenna being potty trained, but she had no accidents!!! We were so happy to have them with us and can't wait until the next time.

Fall Day in November

What a glorious fall we have had this year!!!! It reached 70 degrees several days last week. Taking advantage of another beautiful fall day, Dave and Makenna painted Jared's shed.
It reminds me of 25 years ago on a summer day when Dave and Allison painted the bottom brick of our first home. Allison ended up covered from head to toe with red paint.
I must admit that Makenna was a little neater when she finished (probably because I was supervising this time)...

60 - Just A Number

Yep, I turned the big "6-0". Did it bother me? - Nope... Why not, you may ask??

Except for a few creaks in the bones - I don't feel much different than I did ten years ago.

But the most important reason is because, 30 years ago as I turned the big "3-0" I had just finished 54 radiation treatments and had an x-ray that showed my cancer was in remission.

So every time a big "0" birthday comes around, I think back to 1980 and how happy I was to be celebrating a birthday at all!!!!

As for today, Makenna greeted me with - "Happy Nana" and then Dave asked Makenna how old I was and she replied - "2". Love her to pieces :-)

Here's to a happy, happy day that I got to share with Dave and the Willis family. And thanks for your phone call, Erin - always love hearing from my Texas girl...

Makenna's Bug Party

We were invited to Makenna's 2nd birthday party on Sunday, Oct. 17th. Allison went all out with a ladybug theme. It was a beautiful fall day to celebrate our little ladybug's birthday.
Makenna is our first grand child and the light of our lives. She greets us with a smile, dances with joy in her heart, and makes us feel special with her little pat on our backs. She is the special one - we are blessed to have her in our lives. Happy 2 Makenna...

Fun with the Willis family - August 2010

August brought the Willis family to our home for an extended stay. We got to babysit with Colin and Makenna while Allison and Jared went to the Iowa State fair. The next day the six of us went to the fair - the weather was overcast, which made it a great day to enjoy the fair. Makenna took it all in too. She loved the animal barns, the little hands farm, and she would have done the giant slide all afternoon... Colin slept most of the time - what a good kid!!! Allison was going to head home on Monday, but came down with a horrific headache. Makenna ended up going to work with me and what a helper she was folding t-shirts. Allison was finally feeling better on Tuesday, so they left for Ames that evening. Lo and behold we were inundated with one of our worst storms of the season, especially Ames. Having their drinking water declared undrinkable, the Willis family made their way back to Carlisle on Thursday morning. The grandkids got to entertain us for the next 5 days - what an unexpected, special time for us to cherish.

P.E.O. Outing

On Wednesday, July 21st P.E.O. Chapter NT went to Ames and visited the Reiman Gardens and ate at the Shoppes on Grand. I invited the Willis family to the gardens. Makenna loved seeing the butterflies, the 50 gnomes sitting around, and meeting a new friend, Diego Sigala. Colin seemed very content to just ride in his new stroller. It was a nice outing and can you believe it - no rain!!!

Colin James Willis

Colin James Willis was born Wednesday, May 12th at 12:11 p.m. Weighing in at 7-14. I went to Ames each day last week to offer my assistance. I got to be my Makenna's playmate and hold Colin after feedings - I don't think I will ever get tired cuddling Colin or spoiling Miss Makenna. He sure is a cutie and so far sleeps through Makenna's squeals of happiness throughout the day. I am heading up again this next week to see that Allison rests whenever she can. Get ready Willis family to have some dirt dessert too.

I have been so blessed with all my grandchildren and words can't express how thankful I am that both of my girls wanted me to be with them when they came home from the hospital with their new little ones!!!!!

We took a short trip to Texas and celebrated Jacob's first birthday (May 2nd). Erin went all out - she decorated the cake herself and set up the party at the park. What a fun time we all had. I wasn't ready to leave and whined all day on Sunday, but to no avail - we still left on Monday.

Spring 2010

We have had some nice spring days in 2010- several 70 degree days and even a couple of 80 degree days... This spring we have done the following so far: planted our garden and the Willis'; had an egg hunt at my mom's in Indianola on Palm Sunday; attended sunrise service on Easter; gave my grand daughter her spring basket; visited my dad's grave on the 5th anniversary of his passing; helped my mom buy a new computer; and booked a flight to Texas for Jacob's 1st birthday. Oh, how I love spring days in Iowa... and so does my Makenna!!!

We traveled south with my mom and sister, Connie and spent 8 days with the Ferrera's in Terrell, Texas. Erin was the perfect hostess. She made each one of us feel special. Great meals and fun excursions were planned throughout our stay. Of course
we got to spoil Jacob. What a happy, happy boy - smiles for everyone. Didn't get him to walk but taught him to dunk a basketball ;-). It is always so hard to leave, but hopefully we will return for Jacob's 1st birthday in May. Until then, you Ferrera's take care. Thanks again for welcoming us into your home. Love you guys...

Makenna spent 5 days with us while her parents went to Florida. We had such a fun time with her. A field trip to the Bass Pro Shops was first on the list. She loved looking at all the stuffed animals. The lights and all the activity at the bowling alley intrigued her immensely. The next day we took her to see my mom in Indianola. She made a bee-line to the puppy in the living room. On Sunday we made and decorated a cake for her dad's birthday. She's her Nana's girl - loves chocolate too. The last field trip was to the airport during a blizzard. Once there we could hardly keep up with her. She was non-stop from one end of the airport to the other. She was stunned to see her folks come down the escalator, but sooooo happy to entertain them once safe back in Carlisle. Can't wait to have her come again!!!!

This winter has brought 2 blizzards, lots of fog, and an ice storm so far. Not much sun on any given day either. Seems like we have been in hibernation the month of January. Spring can't come too soon for me. Sure hope that groundhog in PA. doesn't see his shadow!!

Was it ever... Erin and Jacob arrived on the 17th, Makenna and Allison came down on the 18th, 20th, 23rd, Jess and Gabe came on the 19th, and Jason and Jared came on the 23rd (they heard we were having Tasty Tacos). We all went to Indianola on the 24th for a Christmas gathering with my family. Jason's flight was delayed until the next morning (the 25th), it was nice to have him for an extra evening. Erin's flight was also delayed 2 hrs. that afternoon. She was at the airport waiting to board, not an easy task with a 7 month old, but they made it back to Texas in time for the Ferrera festivities.
What can I say, but that we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of having all the family at home again. Erin got some needed sleep but at a price - Jacob is more mobile now - Papa also taught him to pull himself up to things. ;-) Took Erin to Target - wasn't our usual shopping spree, but she did find a few things for herself!!! The girls got their annual haircut and pedicure. We even got to a movie Frog and the Princess... Papa got on friendlier terms with Makenna by taking her on the porch to touch the snow every 10 minutes or so. What a hoot to have Makenna around - she's quite the entertainer. Allison and Soda also got some needed rest, but again probably at a price - Makenna whining a lot to be held during the week. Papa and Nana really do know how to spoil their grand children. oops
Well, all good things must come to an end and it was the 26th at our house. Alone again, naturally...

Blizzard - Dec. 9, 2009

Snow started flying on Tuesday and most of Iowa snuggled in their homes to wait it out. On Wednesday after 14 inches the wind picked up and white outs were happening all over. We are expecting maybe at least 2 more inches by evening. Schools closed up - even ISU - a lot of businesses too. Dave got a puzzle out and we hunkered down for the day. He will have a lot of shoveling to do when it lets up. Not only does he shovel ours out by hand - he goes over to two of our neighbors to dig them out. He'll definitely be ready for his hot cocoa after all that snow!!!

Makenna's First Phone Call

Yep - Makenna placed her first phone call by getting her Mom's phone and pushing buttons. Result - she hit the speed dial for me :-)... Our phone rang and I thought it was Allison, but no one was there. I called back a few minutes later to find out Makenna had been playing with the phone. Her dad checked it out and lo and behold there was a call to our no. for 6 secs. Maybe next time she will say - "Hey Nana, what's up?"

California Trip

We left on Saturday, Sept. 26th for a glorious trip to California. We met up with Erin and her family in Sacramento and drove to Redding for a two night stay. We visited some caverns and went to church services at the ministry school that Jason would like to attend. Next we drove to Trinidad on the coast where we explored the Redwood National forest for 2 days while returning to the comfort of our cabin at night. Just gorgeous!!!!! On to San Fransisco to scout out that city. While there, we went to a Giant's game, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, rode a trolley, went down the crookiedest road on Lombardt. Dave mapped out a walking tour for the two of us on our last day while Erin, Jason, and Jacob went to the 49er game. Rule #1 on our vacation was that we were not to eat at any establishments that were in Iowa or Texas, hence we sampled various cuisines throughout our trip!!
The best part of the trip was spoiling Jacob ;-).

Shower Me With Love

Yep - I love my new tiled shower and floor. We had our fiberglass tub/shower taken out and had a ceramic tiled shower installed. I couldn't be happier. Our tile guy did a fabulous job and added some personal touches. I thought the clear door would bother me (I'm a tad bit modest), but it finishes the shower off nicely.

Ledges State Park

Labor Day found us at Ledges State Park in Boone. We just love to picnic and asked the Willis' to join us. We got there around 10:00 - I know that's early, but it worked in our favor, because the park was packed by 11:00. The hot dogs and smores were as good as ever. Hiking through the streams was a favorite of Makenna's, especially when her mom let her sit and play. Oooooh boy, a very big bath tub. ;-)

Sleepover

Makenna came for her first solo sleepover Thursday night. After taking a long afternoon nap the three of us took a trip to Walmart. (Makenna and I are shopping buddies and we wanted Papa to experience a trip with us) It was a beautiful evening so we also went on a stroll in our neighborhood. Bath time is so much fun with Makenna - never an idle moment in the tub - but Papa held on to her because it was constant movement the entire time. I hope Makenna enjoyed the sleepover as much as we enjoyed having her...

Iowa State Fair

Wouldn't you know the first thing we did at the Iowa State Fair was get a photo op with Cy... It was a cool drizzly day but a fun time was had by all!!! The pork tent was a must for lunch, as was taking Makenna to the Animal Learning Center. We also went through the little hands on Farm. What an educational experience for ages 2-10. Guess that's the teacher in me. I'm sure Jared will agree with me when I say the fudge brownie dipped in chocolate was heavenly ;-) Of course we did the usual - the Cultural Bldg.(saw Rosemary's 1st place painting of her 4 Aunts and the painted patriotic rock), Pioneer Hall, Ag Bldg.(the butter Astronaut was good, but thought the cow was too skinny), 4-H Bldg. (where Makenna had some walking around time), couldn't forget the animal barns (especially since they kept us dry during the brief rain). We did miss the VI Bldg. because we had to take Makenna home for a nap. However, she slept on the way to the car and was wide awake for the drive home. Guess if we had stayed and done the VI Bldg. it would have given her a longer nap. I know the attendance was down this year, but it was great not having to fight the crowd.

Trip to Texas

I went to Texas and visited with Erin and her family for 18 days - Allison and Makenna flew down with me and stayed the first 9 days and then Erin and Jacob flew home with me for 7 days. While in Texas I went to Ham's Peach Orchard, out to eat with Jim and Judy, visited with the Ferrera clan, and had a barbecue at Mason and Angela's on the 4th. I babysat Jacob while Erin finished up her job, took Makenna to Walmart, witnessed Jacob's dedication and attended an ice cream social. I had a fabulous time getting to know my 2 month old grandson. Erin has adapted well to motherhood, as I knew she would. I'm sooooo proud of the job she is doing. I can't wait to be with them again the end of September in California!!! Thanks for having me... it meant alot to be with my two daughters and two grandchildren - a time I will always cherish.

Dave and I went to Ames for the weekend. Dave helped paint a couple more rooms. (one will be redone - not quite the right color green ;-). I mainly watched after Makenna. You say I got the easy job. Not these days - she's fun to be with, but constantly exploring now. And it doesn't take her long to get somewhere, except after she pulls herself up she thinks she can walk and lets go - you gotta be quick or else kaput!!! No fear here - or here - She was so excited to try out her Flintstone car I bought at a garage sale - varoom. However, the swing (another garage sale item- Allison has me hooked) it seemed like fun until the first push - then the tears came. Guess she isn't as big as she thinks. Bet she'll want to try again though...

80th Birthday

My mother's 80th birthday was April 27th. We had a family get-together at Robin's Wood Oven Grill on the 26th to celebrate. I created a book for her with memories that each member of the family had written. I also included family photos. My sister, Connie made her a carrot cake, which my mother thoroughly enjoyed. I think the day went well, considering my mom's apprehension at turning 80.

Jacob David Ferrera

Jacob arrived at 7:41 p.m. on Saturday, May 2nd. He weighed 6 lb. and was 19 1/4 ins. long. So far his hair is black and wavy. His eyes are real dark - so imagine they will be brown real soon. Everyone is doing well and came home Monday around 10:00 p.m. after his circumcision.
The beginning story of Jacob:
On Saturday we went to Allison and Jared's new home in Ames and worked in the yard. Dave tilled the garden, transplanted some flowers, and cut branches off a pine tree. I had the privilege of watching Makenna. :-) On our way home we stopped at Goode nursery for my flowers that we were planning to plant on Sunday. I had a voicemail that Erin had been admitted to the hospital at 5:00 just as we left Goode's at 5:45. When we arrived home Dave started loading the van to head for Texas the next morning. Then Dave planted my flowers, since we would be gone for a couple weeks. I started making arrangements to have a planned meeting at my house Monday evening changed. I was so glad that I had bought the things needed for the meeting ahead of time just needed someone to host for me (bless Julie Cermak). I then did three loads of wash and packed. In the middle of the second load of wash we got another call telling us Erin had delivered Jacob at 7:41 p.m. Wow - that was fast. However, we learned later that Erin had been having contractions all day Saturday. At least at the hospital it went quickly. After driving 12 hrs. Sunday we arrived at the hospital at 7:00 pm to meet our new grandson. We are enjoying him oh so much...

What's In A Name

Erin mentioned hanging wooden letters of Jacob's name in the nursery. After browsing on-line, I suggested to her that we just get some letters and paint them. I also mentioned that I could draw the vehicles from Jacob's crib quilt onto the letters. She went for the idea and the photo is the finished product. There weren't enough vehicles to complete the letters, so I thought it would be nice to add something from Iowa - hence the John Deere tractor. And of course Texas had to be represented - I chose the state flag and the police car is in honor of Jason, the proud father. Papa Dave will have the pleasure of hanging the letters when we visit in May.

My Grandchild Chair

When we were in the Amana's we visited a furniture shop and I was admiring several pieces. One of the things was a napkin holder. I was tempted to buy one and Dave spoke up "I can make one for you" and he did. I also admired a quilt rack - is there any hope I might get one of those some day?!?

Couldn't resist getting her a swimsuit. Now she just needs a sun bonnet and sunglasses... I think the bonnet will be coming soon to protect that pretty little head of hers!

Best Gift Ever

This past weekend Dave and I traveled to the Amana's. For Christmas Dave gave me a two night stay at Annie's Garden Guest House. We had never stayed at a bed and breakfast before, but I definitely would recommend this one. The house itself was built in 1893. There were 3 guest rooms on the 2nd floor - each having their own bathroom - there was also a dining room and a full kitchen. On the top floor(an attic) we could watch a big screen tv or read by a fireplace. The best part was a delicious breakfast each morning. Annie shared lots and lots of info about the Amana Society - how it was communal until the 1930's and what it is like today. Of course we took in all the Amana shops and brought home an Amana woolen sweater, baked goods and chocolates(to enjoy Easter day).

Saturday evening we took a side trip to Iowa City and enjoyed some of my nephew, Jason's fabulous cooking at the Summit. The carrots were scrumptious and Dave loved his homemade sauerkraut. What a treat!! He then showed us the house he had purchased. He has a challenge in renovation, but it should be a fun experience for him. We wish him the best...

Jess and Gabe

Yesterday I had a nice visit with a very dear friend, Jessica. Actually she is a friend of my daughter, Erin. They became friends in 5th grade and stayed extremely close ever since. She was like the third daughter I didn't get to have.
Anyway, she had a baby in February and I was anxious to meet him and see how they were doing. What a handsome young fella Gabe is... He slept all the time I was there, though. Just cuddled right in and went to Never, Never land. Jess looked grrreat and motherhood suits her well. Way to go Jess!!

Ferrera Projects

Dave has now completed another high chair. This one is for baby Ferrera. After finishing it, he was asked to make a bench for Erin to have in her living room. It is now ready to make its move to Texas along with the high chair. Stay tuned as he is beginning a project for me and will be posted in a couple weeks.

My New Best Friend

Meet McKenzie - We have become best buds this past week. I offered to babysit my friend Rosemary's dog for 10 days. I go 3 times a day to feed her, but what she gets sooooo excited about are the walks we take 4 times a day... I know she'll be glad to have Rosemary back home come Monday but she is also going to miss our walks!!

Allison, Jared, and Makenna came for a visit on Saturday. Dave and I babysat Makenna while Allison and Jared went out for an anniversary lunch celebration at the Cracker Barrel. Jared didn't have much to celebrate when his sandwich came. Guess he took one bite and it was gone. :( Allison was a good sport though and shared her meal. After a brief trip to Home Depot, they headed back to Carlisle in time to feed Makenna. It was such a beautiful day that we decided a walk was in order. So we took in the sights of south side Carlisle. For supper we treated them to Tasty Tacos - always something to look forward to. Happy 2nd wedding anniversary Willis' - wishing you many, many more!!

One of the nicest things about returning to Iowa from Texas was a visit from Allison and Makenna. Makenna is becoming a person all of her own now. She loves to grab her feet and the toes go right into her mouth. Allison showed us a new game Makenna loves to play - bouncing on the bed. We went for a walk, but Grandpa had to make sure Makenna didn't have the sun or wind in her face. Once he figured it out - she cuddled right in and dozed off. Thanks for coming down for the day girls. The Tasty Tacos were also an added treat!!!

Texas Trip

What a fine time we had visiting Erin, Jason, and the granddogs!! We took my mom and sister, Connie, with us and were treated like royalty... Some things we did during our visit:

- sought out a flea market (bought old vehicles for Jacob's nursery)
- went to Rockwall and bought Dave new tennies (good deal -$110 shoes for $30)
- treated Erin to a trip to Sam's Club in Mesquite
- Judy and Jim came over so Jim could have a rematch of Scrabble with Connie and my mom
- always nice seeing David and Annie Ferrera
- visited the JFK museum in Dallas and ate at a fabulous restaurant, "Landry's" (Dave and my mom had fried oysters and Connie had Chilean bass)
- shopped at the outlet mall in Allen (got several outfits for the grandchildren)
- took Jene and Luke on walks and of course threw the ball around in the back yard for Luke to retrieve and Jene to tag along

It's always hard to leave and come back to Iowa, but we'll be back in May to welcome Jacob into the family.

Visiting with Makenna

Being retired gives me the advantage of visiting my granddaughter whenever I feel the urge. Granted, I always get permission - I never just pop in... Not yet anyway!

My visit yesterday with Makenna was a very enjoyable one (usually is). She just smiled and jabbered away most of the time. Not just with me, but she also had a nice conversation with the dolly her great-grandma Pauline gave her at Christmas. It was so cute - I just had to share... I also read her some nursery rhymes and danced to the CD - Kids Are Beautiful People.

I also showed up with a cherry limeade for Allison. Bet I get invited back real soon!!!

Be My Valentine

There is an irony here - for years I would whine (believe me, I had it mastered to no avail) that I didn't get any flowers delivered to school. Most all the other teachers received them - not just at valentine's day either. Occasionally someone would ask - have you ever got any, Jeanne? My standard comment was - no and I don't really care to get them, they don't last long anyway. Well - it would have been nice maybe once to go by the office and see my name on some. So what does Dave do, waits until I retire and gets me a beautiful bouquet!! I can't walk down the hall at school beaming and having my peers say what lovely flowers - who did you get them from?! However, I am enjoying every minute seeing them set on my dining room table. Thanks H.B.

Movie Reviews

Just in case you weren't aware of this - I love to watch movies. Old black and whites are my favorite!! Since retiring Dave and I have frequently hit the movie circuit on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. Two reasons - its cheaper and there is free popcorn (Tues.- Southridge and Wed. - Copper Creek). Well the good news - we have seen a lot of interesting movies of late; the bad news - with the Oscar nominations out there won't be too many movies worth seeing for awhile. Below are some of the ones we have seen since the middle of December, in no particular order:
1. Slumdog Millionaire - my favorite - one of the best all around movies we have seen in a long time
2. The Reader - good performances but depressing
3. Revolutionary Road - good performances but depressing
4. Grand Torino - lots of foul language, but Clint is at his best
5. Valkyrie - too bad Tom Cruise failed in his attempt on Hitler
6. Rachel Gets Married - different kind of wedding, but what a great performance by Anne Hathaway
7. Australia - interesting facts about the Aborigines (Hugh Jackman wasn't bad to look at either)
8. Tales of Despereaux - liked Ratatouillee better
9. Madacasgar 2 - fun

Dave is truly enjoying his retirement from teaching. He has completed the following projects since starting in September:
-setting new tile around the fireplace
-siding and painting the entire house
-refinishing two dressers
-constructing a wooden highchair for granddaughter Makenna -(another one is on order for Erin's baby-to-be)
-Erin has also put in an order for a storage bench
